Do I need to know how to sew?
Not at all! This workshop is suitable for beginners and non-sewers. Elaine will guide you through some simple decorative hand stitches that’ll help transform your distressed items. You will also get a printed out guide to take home with instructions to all the stitches used in the session - so you can continue mending more clothing at home.
What kind of clothing or fabric can I bring?
Most things will work, but some things are simpler than others. If you are new to sewing we would recommend: Denim - the more worn the better- as it is softer Cotton/linen/natural fabrics - these are great and easy to handle T’Shirts/ shirts
Is there anything I shouldn’t bring?
Avoid SILK and SATINtype fabrics as they are hard to handle as a beginner. Will I be able to use a sewing machine at Afri Co Lab during the workshop?
This workshop is a hand sewing only workshop. To use our sewing machines - come to our drop-in mending sessions, Dare2Repair, which is on every other Sunday 1pm - 6pm. Visit the Dare2Repair page here: https://www.afri-co-lab.org/dare2repair
Will there be breaks?
Yes there will be a break in the middle of the session. However it is a relaxed session so you are free to move (safely around the room), take mini breaks, use the toilet as you need. Just check in with our Event Host on the day.
What will happen in the session?
- Arrive & settle in - with a drink and a snack - Introduction to visible mending - Look at examples & ideas for inspiration - Learn & practice some simple stitches - Sew & mend your clothing item - Elaine will be on hand to support & help you do this - Show & Tell - Let’s see what we have created - Close the space & head home
Is the space accessible?
The space is not fully accesible. We have a small step to enter the premises, we also have a portable ramp to help. The space is on one level. Unfortunately there are no accessible toilets in our space - please email Tomi at ap.africolab.uk@gmail for more access support and information on
How old do I have to be to attend?
The session is created specifically for adults 18+ We are working on providing more family friendly events - please join our mailing list to stay up to date.
