About the event
Some people change how you work for good. For us at Afri-Co-Lab, one of those people is Nicole Brewer.
We're very happy (and a little bit giddy) that Nicole is coming to our home on the St Leonards seafront to share their book and insights into antiracisit practice.
Over the years, Nicole's teaching and her Antiracist Theatre model has become part of the fabric of Afri-Co-Lab, shaping how we welcome and look after our pals and community, and what we do when things get difficult. You might have heard us talk about "harm reduction." Well, one of the people who taught us what that really means is coming to the Afri-Co-Lab house, and we're inviting you to come and bask in her wisdom and experience.
What's happening?
No lecture, no podium, just our usual cosy Afri-Co-Lab vibes. Our co-director Anna, whose work has been shaped by Nicole's for years, will sit down with her for an honest chat about Nicole's new book, The Antiracist Theatre. They'll talk about what anti-racism looks like in everyday life, and the joy and humour that keep us going.
Think of it as a circle of knowledge, experience, love and good questions. Then it's over to you for your questions and stories.
The vibe
Relaxed and informal, with snacks and good company. You don't need to work in theatre or have read the book, just bring your curiosity.
About the book
The Antiracist Theatre is a practical, warm and often funny guide to kinder, fairer ways of creating together. It's two books in one: one side speaks to Black, Indigenous and People of Colour readers, the other to white allies.
It's full of reflection exercises, questions to chew on and plain-English explanations of words we use all the time but rarely pin down, like "accountability." It's a book for anyone who wants to turn good intentions into everyday action.
"An important and necessary book." — Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright
